Other Names for Sugar

Manufacturers are very clever at disguising sugar under many different names. Here are just a few:

barley malt, beet sugar, brown sugar, buttered syrup, cane juice crystals, cane sugar, caramel, carob syrup, corn syrup, corn syrup solids, date sugar, diastatic malt, ethyl maltol, fructose, fruit juice, fruit juice concentrate, glucose, glucose solids, golden sugar, golden syrup, grape sugar, dextran, dextrose, diastase, high fructose corn syrup, honey, invert sugar, lactose, malt syrup, maltodextrin, maltose, mannitol, molasses, raw sugar, refiner's syrup, sorbitol, sorghum syrup, sucrose, sugar, turbinado sugar, xylitol, yellow sugar

Be sure to check not only your food labels, but also the labels on your vitamins and toothpaste if you are wanting to reduce your sugar intake.

  2. If your watching sugar intake do you look at grams of sugar or grams of carbohydrates?

  3. Great question! I forget about all the low carb diets out there. Really, simple or refined carbs should be limited anyway and more complex carbs added to the diet, like whole grains, beans, seeds, nuts, oats, veggies, and potatoes. Carbs like these should make up a good 65% of your daily food intake (and 20% good fats & 15% protein). A good rule of thumb on sugar is if it, or one of its many aliases, is listed in the first 5 ingredients, that's a high sugar content and you may want to pass on that food.

  4. So, what about fruit, you might ask? True, fruit is a simple carbohydrate. But it also contains the fiber, vitamins, and minerals our bodies need, unlike forms of concentrated sugar - white sugar, brown sugar, honey, malt, glucose, and syrup. Most of these forms are devoid of vitamins and minerals. White sugar has 90% of its vitamins & minerals removed in the processing, and when we overload on these types of carbs, our metabolism becomes inefficient, contributing to a lack of energy and poor weight control.
    I hope all this helped!(:
